October Season Handover: Counter Switch from Autumn to Winter

The last day of October is a natural rhythm point for a jewellery store: the National Day sales peak has passed, Black Friday and Singles Day stocking is not yet at its climax, and customer attention shifts from "buy something for the holiday" to "prepare for winter". This gap is the perfect window for a seasonal display handover. The handover is not about wiping the counters and changing a backdrop; it is about switching the whole display system from autumn to winter: product mix, props, lighting atmosphere and packaging style all need to change gear together. Done well, the counter is ready when the December peak arrives; done poorly, the scramble to adjust in cold weather costs more than time.

Start with the product mix. Autumn is about commuter wear: small pendant, everyday studs and minimalist rings sell best, and the display emphasizes lightness with loose, easy-to-pick layout. From November, the focus shifts to celebration and gifting: heavier chains, bracelets and bridal pieces start moving. The first task of the handover is to give the centre island and hero positions to winter styles, moving summer thin chains and chokers to side cabinets or stock. The standard for retiring items is simple: pieces with the lowest sales in the past two weeks and no connection to winter scenes come off first to free space for the heroes.

Next, switch the props. For winter counters, move from light and cool tones to deep and warm ones. Autumn props favour warm white, light grey and wood tones, looking fresh with natural light; winter suits rich brown, wine red and dark green, with more velvet, leather and suede so the eye warms up first. You do not need to renovate the whole store: change the main background board, tray base colours and lightbox pictures to a winter theme, keeping side cabinets as they are to preserve a layered, unified look. If the budget allows, change one or two lightbox images with close-ups of jewellery under warm light; they speak louder than any text.

Lighting should follow. Winter days are shorter and stores have less natural light, so counters usually need a bit more brightness to stay as airy as summer. But do not simply raise brightness: winter jewellery sells on texture and warmth, so the colour temperature can be slightly warmer than summer, making gold, rose gold and wine-red pieces look fuller. Give spotlights a round of angle checks too; during summer many stores aim them away to keep cool, and after winter starts you can refocus them on hero positions so every winter hero becomes a focal point. Light always follows the merchandise: wherever the goods move, move the light.

Packaging and gifts should switch seasons as well. Winter gift boxes favour deep colours, velvet surfaces and Christmas or New Year motifs, clearly distinct from summer light paper boxes. Bring the seasonal boxes out of the stockroom to the packaging display and the cash-register area, convenient for sellers and echoing the season. The free gift attached to orders can also change: swap summer fabric bags and fans for winter warm-pack pouches and velvet bags; the cost is small but the customer feeling is direct. In inventory, do a packaging stocktake at the changeover and sort over-season boxes into storage to avoid mixing.

Finally, keep a rhythm. The handover does not have to finish in a day; do it in three steps: finish the product rotation and backdrop replacement this weekend; complete lighting adjustments and lightbox updates by mid-week; finish the packaging display and gift switch by month end. After each step, take a day to stand at the counter as a customer and check where summer still lingers. Seasonal change is an annual assignment for every store; turn it into a routine and you will never be in a panic before the peak season. Closing October is not for October itself, but to lay a smooth road for the November and December peaks.

The handover is also a good time for small overlooked details: remove National Day decorations, strings and standees before they clash with winter elements; check stickers on roller shutters and windows for faded or peeling condition, since an old sticker is worse than none; update price tags and promotional labels as winter pricing plans change, replacing handwritten tags with standard ones. Each item is small alone, but together they shape the store wider impression, so none can be neglected.

Also worth doing at the end of October is updating the store display archive. Photograph every counter in its winter initial state, recording layout, prop positions and lighting parameters for reference. When reviewing after the December peak, these photos become the most direct evidence: which positions sold best, which areas stayed cold, whether lighting and props need adjustment. Stores that manage display by feeling repeat the same chaos every year; stores that keep archives build on past experience and grow better each season. A seasonal handover is not just about appearances; it is an investment worth recording in the store operating data.
