The part of a watch counter that wears out first is rarely the metal frame — it's the velvet on top. Before and after each try-on, the watch is set down and lifted off the velvet roller; cuffs, straps and fingernails brush it all day. Within two months a fine fuzz builds up, it looks grey, and a white cloth comes away with lint. Leave it longer and a crystal case picks up a hairline scratch on contact. Plenty of stores blame careless customers for those scratches. The real source is the prop.
Too many stores buy a prop once and run it to failure without counting the wear. A velvet surface has no warranty period; it only counts usage. Brushed by the case back dozens of times a day, even good velvet won't last two months. Take the S11 watch stand: a matte-gold bracket with a velvet roller that turns 360 degrees to show the dial — beautiful, but that roller is abraded by the case back every single day. When we build watch display props for overseas clients, we spec the velvet density and roller tension explicitly. Too low a density or too loose a tension, and it pills in three weeks. Pilling isn't a looks problem; it means short fibers are shedding, and those fibers catch in the case seams and scratch the crystal the next time someone wipes the watch.
The SH51 five-piece set uses a misty-pink velvet lining with precise slots — high-end, gift-grade. But this velvet is delicate; in humid southern weather it boards up and the ring cradles spring back slowly. It shouldn't sit open under counter lights for long; rotate it against the plain velvet trays in daily use. The light-green velvet tray TP17, with ultra-clear glass and a metal frame, looks clean — yet pale velvet shows dirt fast and needs a lint roller weekly, not when the grey is already visible. The roller is the cheapest thing on the counter and the first thing the customer's eye lands on.
A simple cue we give stores: run a finger across the roller once a week. If it catches or leaves lint on the pad, that's the change point, whatever the calendar says. Tie it to the same checklist as wiping the glass and checking the light strip, and it stops being an afterthought. We've watched a counter lose a five-figure watch sale because the customer noticed a fuzzed roller first. The prop is part of the product story, not the background.
The cost argument is the one managers listen to. A featured piece's crystal refinish can exceed the counter's whole-year cushion budget. Spend it on prevention and the glass stays clear through the season. The grade of velvet matters as much as the schedule: a denser pile resists pilling longer and costs little more at the PO stage, and the cushion is the cheapest line on the prop's invoice yet the most visible to the customer. Re-velveting doesn't mean scrapping the whole prop: on most stands the cushion is a live part, pull it, fit a same-color insert, keep the metal frame. As a watch-box maker we tell clients to keep a spare cushion set so a prop can rotate off-duty and a clean one always covers the counter.
In the end, the moment to swap the velvet is before it pills while it still looks fine — not after it sheds lint. Many stores wait for a complaint, but that scratch was set a week earlier. Half the dignity of watch display sits in the brightness of the metal; the other half, in the cleanliness of the velvet.

米金提花织锦五件套SH51的内衬是柔雾粉金丝绒加精准卡位，礼盒档次够高。但这种丝绒更娇，遇到南方回南天，绒面吸潮会结板，卡位里的戒指托回弹慢。它不该长期敞在柜台灯下，得和常驻展示的普通绒托盘错开用。浅绿绒布托盘TP17配超白玻璃和金属框，看着清爽，可浅色绒一脏就显眼，得每周用粘尘辊走一遍，不能等肉眼看见灰才动。
我跟过一个柜姐，她每周五下班前用粘尘辊把三只用过的展具走一遍，周一换上备用枕芯。她说表一放上去不挂丝，客人才敢自己拿。这话实在。换绒面不用整只展具报废，多数展具的枕芯是活件，拆下来换一片同色绒就行，金属架继续用。我们做手表盒厂家这行，常建议客户备一套替用枕芯，展具轮流下岗，店里永远有干净的那只顶上。
有些店为了省，枕芯破了才换，结果那周连着两块表回来返修镜面，算下来比一年的枕芯都贵。省错了地方。顺手说一句，浅色绒托盘别用湿布擦，水进绒里更难干，干粘尘辊配软毛刷才是正路。说到底，展具绒面该换的节点，是看着还行但已经起球之前，不是已经掉毛之后。很多店等到客人投诉划痕才动，其实那道痕早在一周前就埋下了。腕表陈列道具的体面，一半在金属亮不亮，一半在绒面净不净。
