When the Cabinet Light Strip Dims: Swap It Without Closing

The light strip inside a watch cabinet looks brilliant on day one, throwing a clean white glow that makes every dial read clearly. Give it a year or so, and the sections nearest the back panel start to yellow and dim. The lume and the markers at the dial edge lose their punch, and the customer's first thought is 'is this watch old?' — when what aged was the light, not the watch. The wall-hung display cabinet we use, DG5, pairs a champagne-gold metal frame with ultra-clear glass and a clip-on white acrylic slotted tray on the counter; a hidden light strip runs through the body for three-dimensional lighting. No LED survives being lit twelve or thirteen hours a day, every day, for years. The first to age is usually the end nearest the power feed, or the bend where the strip folds — those spots run hot and fade fast. We once watched a rival's cabinet where half the watches sat in shadow by mid-afternoon; the staff had stopped noticing, but every customer did. Catching the dimming is easy; the hard part is replacing it without pulling the whole cabinet off the wall. The normal approach is to do it in batches: note which sections have faded, then swap just those lengths before opening or after closing, while the rest stays lit, the counter stays open, the business doesn't stop. The DG5 tray is clip-on, so you lift it and reach the channel behind the strip — far easier than those cabinets where everything is glued down. An old glued cabinet means calling a technician and closing for half a day; a modular one you service yourself, and the long-run math is very different. While you're in there, wipe the jewelry tray underneath, TP20, too: red velvet with a gold frame and multiple slots, a central round zone for the hero piece. When the light is up, the hero jumps out; when the strip dims, it's the first thing to fall flat. One detail people miss: keep the colour temperature uniform. If the new section runs two or three hundred kelvin cooler than the old one, you get a cold patch next to a warm patch, and the customer spots the repair instantly. So we stock light strips by the same batch, same temperature, and swap any section with no visible seam. The deep-blue velvet ring tray DJ5 doesn't emit light itself — it depends entirely on the strip above — and when that strip goes yellow, the fire in a whole row of rings goes dull. The strip's condition matters more to the sell than the tray does. At bottom, a light strip is a consumable, not a fit-and-forget fitting. Put it on the weekly checklist: note any dim section, swap it in batches, and the counter stays evenly bright. The customer never knows you changed a light. They just feel the shop is always crisp and the watches always look new. Behind that feeling is exactly this small, never-closing piece of work.
