The Weekend Rush: Adding Watch Stands Without Chaos

Saturday at eleven, the door opens and three or four groups land at the watch counter at once. On a quiet weekday one person browses slowly; on the weekend five hands reach at the same time. Adding display space has to happen half an hour before the rush, or it turns into chaos once the crowd is already there. We usually re-set the surface by half past ten, not after the first customer asks to see something. Six watches to a row is comfortable on a normal day; the weekend needs extra capacity. The DJ61 three-part display set, graphite grey with champagne-gold trim, originally zoned for rings, earrings and necklaces, gets one section cleared on Saturdays to hold two hero watches. It was not built for timepieces, but the base is steady and the velvet cradle grips a strap, so it does the job in a pinch. Setting it up early looks far more composed than hunting for a stand while a customer's hand is already out. With more stands on the counter the layout has to stay fixed; I keep a mental note of which watch sits where, so the close-out tally is clean. There is a limit to cramming. More people means less room at the glass; pack the watches too tight and customers cannot lean in to look, and crystal surfaces get knocked. My rule: push the core models forward one slot, pull the secondary ones back, and leave a gap wide enough for a body to slip sideways between rows. Leave the watches some air too. Shoulder to shoulder, nobody can read a dial. On a crowded Saturday I also run the case lights a notch brighter than on a weekday. More bodies block the light, and a dial that reads grey shows no texture. The try-on peak is also on the weekend. A watch taken off a wrist should never be set down loose on the counter. The BD25 ivory velvet drawstring pouch cinches shut in one pull. The tried-on watch goes in first, kept dust-free and stopped from rolling across the glass. The BD6 branded drawstring bag, printed with the house mark, is for the customer who has decided; it looks dignified in their hand and doubles as a walking ad. I keep a stack of both under the counter so I never leave the case to fetch one. With so many hands around, the moment a watch leaves its cradle I note whose wrist it is on. I do not let guests pass a piece around to compare; that is exactly how one goes missing. Each watch back on its cradle gets a glance at the case-back number before I turn to the next group. Besides adding capacity, that is the other string I cannot let go on a Saturday. Then there is the bag on the counter edge, blocking half the light. While I add capacity I keep one clear stretch of counter at the outer edge, reserved for customers' bags and drinks, so nothing lands on the display surface. When someone steps away for water, they know where their things go and they will not drape them across a watch. At close, the added positions come down and every watch is checked back into the safe. The weekend's temporary abundance has to be folded back into weekday order before the lights go off. The first customer on Monday morning should see no trace of yesterday's crowd, and certainly should not find a watch missing.
