What makes a watch stand base steady
When a watch lands on a display stand, the first thing a customer notices is not the watch—it is whether the stand holds steady. Our metal watch display stands pair a gold-tone metal base with a black velvet cushion, and a set is arranged at staggered heights on purpose. The stagger is not random; it lets every watch be seen head-on instead of hiding behind its neighbour.
The base is the backbone of the whole stand. We normally use turned and welded solid or hollow metal rods, finished with a champagne-gold or bright-gold spray coat. Before spraying, the surface must be de-greased and primed, or the gold rubs off at a touch and a white glove leaves a streak. Some clients ask for plating instead: a thicker, brighter layer, but more costly, and hard to justify in small runs. The underside of the base needs a ring of anti-slip pads, or the stand slides the moment the glass counter is wiped and the watch tips with it.
The black velvet cushion that cradles the watch is bonded to a metal arm. The adhesive has to be neutral-cure; acidic glue corrodes the metal and embrittles the velvet over time. The cushion's curve is cut for a common case diameter, and because men's and women's watches differ a lot, one stand model often ships with two cushion curves. Too loose and the watch lists; too tight and it looks cramped—the tolerance is found by testing samples again and again. The angle where the arm meets the base is welded fixed, so a prototype must come first.
The staggered heights are not picked at whim either. The lowest spot usually takes a sports watch, the highest a thin dress watch, with the rest in between. Enough sightline gap is left between tiers that a customer reading through the glass takes in the whole row at a glance. Many overseas clients want the stands knock-down, so they stack flat after a trade show and save freight—which means a quick-release joint at the weld, and the factory has to confirm both strength and feel before committing.
The wall thickness of the metal tube also matters. A solid rod is steady but heavy, and a carton shipped overseas costs more for the weight; a hollow rod is light but thin walls crack at the weld. For most clients we land on a 1.2 mm wall hollow tube—a compromise of weight and strength. The base needs enough counterweight that the watch's centre of gravity does not tip it forward. The velvet cushion collects dust over time, and a clerk who wipes it with a normal wet tissue mats the pile; it needs a velvet brush used in the direction of the nap. We often ship a care card saying keep alcohol away. Overseas clients also police compliance: the metal coating must pass REACH, the cushion adhesive must be solvent-free, and asking early avoids a rejected shipment.
A watch stand is not complicated to make; what is hard is making every single one stand just as steady and just as upright. We usually tell clients to order three samples, live with them in the case for a week, then release the production run. Colour drift in the base paint, shade in the velvet, the exact lean of the posture—none of it is truly visible until the stand sits in the real counter. A watch display prop from a watch box manufacturer is, after all, made for the counter, and talk of craft away from the counter is empty.

Junyimei — every watch, steady and upright on the counter.
