When a jewelry store gets refurbished, lighting is usually the last line item. Cabinets, flooring, signage, then "some spotlights". Yet the same collection can look like two different price tiers in two different stores. The variable is rarely the merchandise. It is the light. Here are six questions retailers actually ask, answered with numbers rather than adjectives.
Q1 | Why does a diamond come alive in the store and go flat at home?
This is physics, not sales talk. A professional jewelry showcase runs accent lighting at roughly 750-1500 lux, with hero positions pushed to 2000-3000 lux, while ambient store lighting stays around 300-500 lux. That gives an accent-to-ambient ratio somewhere between 10:1 and 30:1. The human visual system is hardwired to look at the brightest point in the field, and that ratio is what creates the spotlight effect. A living room, by contrast, sits at 100-300 lux under a broad diffuse ceiling fixture with a colour rendering index near Ra 80. Diamond fire depends on intense point sources refracting through the facets; diffuse light simply cannot reproduce it. The mature response is not to dodge the question. Invite the customer to view the stone once by a window in daylight and once back at the counter. Buyers who are satisfied under both conditions return fewer pieces and feel less let down later.

Q2 | How should colour temperature be chosen? Can one setting cover everything?
It cannot, and the cost is category-specific. Gold and rose gold read best at 3000-3500K, where warm light reinforces the richness of the metal. Diamonds, platinum and silver want 4000-5700K, closer to midday daylight, which maximises facet brilliance. Jade sits at 4000-4500K, where its translucency is clearest. Pearls and many coloured stones land at 3500-4000K, since overly cool light flattens the orient of a pearl. Colour rendering is the hard threshold: CRI 90 is the floor, Ra 95-98 is the target for hero pieces, and for rubies or coral the R9 value for saturated red should exceed 90. Poor rendering turns a sapphire grey, and customers who see a grey sapphire start questioning authenticity. A single colour temperature across a whole store therefore penalises several categories by default. The fix is zoned control with tunable white, matched to the display props themselves, because velvet, acrylic and metal trays each reflect light very differently and act as a second filter.
Q3 | Does lighting actually convert into revenue? Is there measurable evidence?
There is, at controlled-trial level. Lighting manufacturer Zumtobel ran a field study with German fashion retailer Gerry Weber in which nothing in the store changed except the lighting: an LED accent scheme tuned to the target customer group, with levels raised from 450 lux to 600 lux. Over two months, turnover ran about 10 percent ahead of a matched reference store of comparable size, layout and catchment, with some reports citing 12 percent. Sensor data also showed lower stress responses and longer dwell. Separate research found that adjusting the accent-to-ambient ratio lifted product interaction by around 35 percent and dwell time by around 24 percent, while the Lighting Research Center puts well-designed retail lighting at a 10-20 percent sales gain. Grocery data points the same way: Philips recorded roughly 11 percent higher sales on illuminated shelves versus unlit controls. The industry rule of thumb is a two to three year payback on energy alone, but six to twelve months once the sales effect is counted. At jewelry price points, the same percentage translates into a very different absolute number.
Q4 | Is restrained, minimal packaging really more appealing to buyers?
Yes, and there is a lighting reason that rarely gets discussed: minimalism is not about spending less, it is about giving light somewhere to land. Under a Ra 95 accent beam, heavy foiling, glossy lamination and dense patterning generate a field of specular noise, and that noise competes with the jewelry for the single brightest point in the frame. The customer's eye follows the brightest point, wherever it is. A matte, low-reflectance, single-colour box or display stand simply hands that brightest point back to the product. It can be specified: keep the luminance ratio between the accent beam on the piece and the surface of the prop above 5:1, and choose low-gloss finishes such as matte flock or fine-textured board rather than high-gloss lacquer or mirror acrylic, which turn into a mirror under a spotlight and show the customer their own reflection and the lamp. Keep unified glare rating below 13 and use deep-recessed or louvred fixtures. The reverse also holds: minimal packaging depends on good light to hold it up. Under poor light, restraint reads as cheapness. Brands that copy a minimalist rendering and end up looking flat usually have a lighting problem, not a design problem.

Q5 | Can display lighting damage the merchandise?
It can, and the damage is largely irreversible. Ultraviolet and heat are the two culprits. Amethyst, kunzite and rose quartz fade under prolonged UV, with deep purple drifting to pale lavender. Topaz loses lustre. Pearls and ivory bleach under strong light. Amber darkens and can crack at weak points. Opal contains structural water, and sustained heat drives that moisture out, producing crazing and the loss of play-of-colour. This is a large part of why LED replaced halogen and metal halide in showcases: far less heat, almost no UV, whereas halogen is bright but grossly inefficient and hot, and metal halide offers a full spectrum at the same thermal cost. Four practical rules follow. Light pearls with soft side diffusion rather than direct beams. Keep hydrous and organic gems out of sustained tight spots. Maintain distance and ventilation between fixtures and stock inside the case. Rotate hero positions so no single piece stands under a spotlight for three months straight.
Q6 | On a limited budget, what gets fixed first?
In order of return: first, replace low-CRI sources, because anything under Ra 80 is quietly discounting your inventory, and full-spectrum high-CRI is the fastest payback available. Second, control glare, keeping UGR under 13 with deep-recessed fixtures and shields, since glare suppresses the willingness to look closely. Third, build the three layers of ambient, accent and atmosphere with a deliberate contrast ratio instead of lighting the whole floor evenly. Fourth, zone colour temperature by product category. Only then invest in smart dimming with preset scenes for appraisal, display and reception. Each step delivers on its own, so nothing has to be torn out and restarted. Q1|为什么一颗钻在店里"活",拿回家就"死"了?

不行,而且代价具体到品类。黄金、玫瑰金适合 3000–3500K 暖光,暖光强化金属的温润与厚重;钻石、铂金、银饰适合 4000–5700K 的中性偏冷光,模拟正午日光,把刻面火彩推到最大;翡翠玉石在 4000–4500K 下"水头"最清楚;珍珠与部分彩宝则落在 3500–4000K,过冷的光会破坏珍珠的晕彩。显色指数是硬门槛:CRI(Ra)≥90 是底线,重点展品建议 Ra 95–98,红宝石、珊瑚这类还要看 R9(饱和红)是否大于 90。显指不足最直观的后果是蓝宝石变"灰宝石",顾客甚至会怀疑货的真假。所以整店一套色温,等于让某几个品类天生吃亏。解法是分区控光、可调色温,再配合珠宝陈列道具的材质选择——绒布、亚克力、金属托的反射特性完全不同,道具其实是灯光的第二道滤镜。
Q3|灯光真能换成销售额吗?有可量化的证据吗?

是,但从灯光角度看有一个很少被提起的原因:简约不是为了省,是为了让光有地方落。当 Ra 95 的重点光打进柜内,繁复的烫金、亮面覆膜、密集花纹会在表面炸出大量高光噪点,这些噪点会和珠宝抢夺"画面里最亮的那个点"——而顾客的眼睛只会跟着最亮点走。哑光、低反射、单色的首饰盒与珠宝摆台,本质是把最亮点让给货本身。可以量化:柜内重点光与道具表面的亮度比建议做到 5:1 以上,道具优先选低光泽面(哑面绒布、微砂纹),而不是高亮烤漆或镜面亚克力——后者在射灯下会变成一面镜子,顾客看见的是自己的倒影和灯管。同时把统一眩光值控制在 UGR

Q5|灯光会不会把货照坏?哪些品类要格外小心?
会,紫外与热是两个杀手,而且损伤基本不可逆。紫水晶、孔赛石、粉晶在长期紫外照射下会褪色,深紫可以褪成淡淡的浅紫;托帕石会失去光泽;珍珠和象牙在强光下会被漂白;琥珀会变深,脆弱处甚至开裂;欧泊内部含水,长期被灯烤会失水产生细密龟裂,变彩随之消失。LED 相对卤素灯、金卤灯的优势正在这里——发热低、紫外极少,卤素灯亮度高但能效极低、热量大,金卤灯光谱完整却同样高热。落到操作上有四条:珍珠系用侧向漫射光而不是强光直射;含水与有机宝石避开长时间聚光;柜内灯具与货保持距离并留导热通风;主推位定期轮换,别让同一件货在射灯下站满三个月。做珠宝展示架和柜内布光时,把这几条写进方案,比事后补救划算得多。
