Unboxing Day: Test-Fitting Watch Props Before They Go On Show到货那一刻,腕表道具先试装

When an overseas client cracks open a crate of watch display props, the job has barely begun. It is not unpack and put it up. It is test-fit, inspect, then correct. Get this stage right and you save rework later; skip it and within three days the case wobbles, the pieces do not line up, the lacquer shows fingerprints — all your own mess.

First, count the parts. A white-and-champagne modular piece like the DJ30, built for rings, necklaces and bracelets, arrives as boards and clips. Do not rush to assemble — check the list first: how many posts, how many brackets, how many bases. Miss one fitting and waiting for the replacement is a week. We have been there: a client half-built the set, found a clip missing, and the whole thing sat idle.

Direction is the next trap. With modular pieces, which way the velvet faces, which end the clip goes up — the drawing is clear, but hands move fast and it goes in reversed. Reversed is not fatal, but under the lights neighbouring pieces read uneven and the client frowns. Our habit: build the first unit to spec, photograph it as the reference, and match the rest to it. Do not let everyone invent their own version.

Do not skip the boxes either. The high-gloss black-lacquer octagonal box, SH50, has strong mirror sheen with red jacquard lining, velvet slots, a gold clasp and foiled logo. This type fears two things: fingerprints and shipping scratches on arrival, worst on black lacquer; and a misaligned foiled logo — for a name like Laofengxiang, one crooked word and the whole batch goes back. On opening, pull three or four to check the lacquer and logo position before breaking the rest of the seal.

The wall cabinet is the real installation test. A modular wall-plus-island piece like the DG11, wood with soft light, looks simple but lives or dies on being level. If the wall panel is not plumb, the tray tips forward; if the island legs are not locked, it sways at a touch. We ship a level with it, and step one on arrival is measuring level, not staging stock. Skip this and every counter wipe reveals something leaning.

It does not always go smoothly. Once a client, eager to open, staged everything before counting and found two bases missing from a DJ30 set; the necklace busts leaned every which way on day one and a shopper posted the photo online. We now block the first hour after arrival for counting and test-fit, staging later. The time saved at acceptance is paid back at the counter.

After the fit, do not seal the crate yet. Leave half a day for the client or staff to run the whole set through their hands: cushion feel, slot tension, the sound of the closure. A sagging cushion, a tight slot, a loose clasp — pull and replace on the spot; it is ten times easier than tearing it down three days in.

One more thing easy to forget: do not set the wooden crate straight on a damp floor. In the plum-rain south, the base absorbs moisture and the acrylic edges and lacquer corners blister before you even open it. We have clients lift and ventilate for half a day first — it looks redundant, yet it has saved a whole shipment at the critical moment.

In the end, test-fitting on arrival is translating the factory standard into the store standard. The factory builds to the drawing; the store uses it by eye. That half-step in between, whoever owns it owns the peace of mind. The steadiest clients we have supplied all test-fit, accept and document on day one — and half a year later the case still looks new.
